It seems that over the past several years, the Christmas Holidays would not be complete without a new Elmo robot. It all started with Tickle Me Elmo. It was the Furby, parent waiting in line to get one for their children. I recall there may even have been fighting as the last ones rolled off the shelf.
First there was Tickle Me Elmo, replaced by Tickle Me Elmo TMX (Tickle Me Elmo Extreme), and now by Elmo Live. These releases changed the face of holiday marketing. The Elmo robots were and are so cool that they are virally marketed by shows like Good Morning America and news station across the country. Actually, Mattel seems to have redefined both the real-world launch formula as well as the incredible application of the scarcity principle. You can't tel me that they cannot make enough stock to cover all possible orders. Nope, first they build a buzz and then limit supply. It's really a great, real-life example of how Internet Marketers launch products. Pretty brilliant. How else can you explain people paying over retail on eBay as the Holidays near. Go ahead, check it out in my Elmo Live eBay display.
So, it seems that this year, Elmo Live is going to be the big, scarce toy. Expectations are that even though the toy was launched on October 14 of this year, supplies will dry up and shelves will be empty by the Holidays. So if you want one, you'd better get one now. You don't want to disappoint little Suzie, now, do you?
